#1: (500) Days of Summer

500 days of summer

FILMS FOR THOUGHT
By: Alex Holzum
WARNING: SPOILERS INCLUDED
The first film that I would like to talk about on this blog is
(500) Days of Summer featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.  The reason I am choosing this film instead of any other movie out there is because it is one of my all-time favorites and it is very unique and therefore provides lots of details to discuss.

First, a quick synopsis of 300 days of summer, 500 days(500) Days of Summer.  The movie begins with a warning.  We are told not to expect a love story from this movie, but rather a story of how boy meets girl.  We start with a character by the name of Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).  He is  a hopeless romantic who is just looking for someone to love.  As fate would have it, Tom is working as a greeting card designer at the company where Summer gets hired as a receptionist.  From here, the rest, as they say, is history.  The narrator of this film interrupts in order to fill us in on how spectacular and unique Summer is.  For the rest of the movie we see Tom and Summer’s relationship develop into a modern-day relationship.  I think it is a moderately realistic portrayal of the thoughts and feelings that accompany most relationships these days.  For example, there is not some dramatic, tragic event that causes Summer to stop liking Tom; it kind of just happened.  I think this is seldomly seen in movies these days because it is sort of unsatisfying for all persons involved. Most people want a concrete reason for why someone breaks up with someone else, other than “you just weren’t the one”.  But it is so often seen that a couple breaks up because half of them just weren’t feeling it; that is what happens in (500) Days of Summer.
There are MANY just fantastic details and scenes in this movie that make it highly entertaining and pleasing to watch but I will limit myself to my top five:
1.    The color scheme of the whole movie. I have tried to match the color scheme of this blog entry to that of the movie.
2.    The music and musical performances.
3.    The IKEA scene.
4.    The narrations.
5.    The jumping around throughout the 500 days of Tom and Summer.

I hope that I have convinced anyone who has not seen this to go see it because it is honestly a very good movie.
